How it works

From idea to outfit in three steps

  1. The DollThreads designer open on a laptop, choosing the fabric for a strawberry tee and gingham skirt1AI picture

    Design it

Pick a garment, then give it your prints and colors. The fabric preview updates as you go, so you see exactly what you will get.

  2. A printed cotton panel on a sewing table with every piece of the tee and skirt laid out and labeled2AI picture

    We print it

Your design is printed on cotton with every piece laid out, labeled and ready to cut, then mailed to your door.

  3. Hands cutting the tee front out of the printed panel along its solid cut line3AI picture

    Cut and sew

Cut on the solid lines, sew on the dashed ones, and follow the numbered steps printed right on the panel.

What’s on the panel

Every piece is already on the fabric

One cotton panel (29 by 18 inches for most outfits), printed with your whole outfit. Bring your own thread and closures.

Why a printed panel

Skip straight to the sewing

Paper patterns ask for an evening of prep before the first stitch. A DollThreads panel does all of it for you.

With a paper pattern

  • Print, trim and tape pattern pages together
  • Trace every piece onto your fabric
  • Hunt for fabric that matches your idea
  • Transfer notches and grainlines by hand
  • Keep the instruction sheet nearby

With DollThreads

  • Arrives printed on cotton, ready to go
  • Cut straight along the printed line
  • Your own prints and colors, on every piece
  • Notches, grainlines and labels printed on
  • Steps printed right on the panel

Made for sewing together

A first sewing project you can share

Doll clothes are small, so the seams are short and an outfit comes together quickly. Design it side by side on the screen, then sit down and sew it together.

  • For a grandparent and grandchild, a parent and child, or a sewing club
  • Little ones choose the prints, older kids sew with a grown-up nearby
  • A handmade outfit makes a thoughtful gift

Questions, answered

All questions
Which dolls do the clothes fit?

You pick your doll’s size when you design: 18-inch dolls like American Girl® and Our Generation®, 16-inch, 14½-inch and 14-inch dolls, 11½-inch fashion dolls like Barbie®, or Blythe®. If your doll isn’t on the list, enter its measurements instead.

Every pattern is drafted from those measurements, so the pieces scale to your doll. Dolls of the same height vary in shape, so the fit may differ between brands.

What arrives in the mail?

A woven cotton fabric panel (it doesn’t stretch) with every piece of your outfit printed in the prints and colors you chose. Each piece has a solid cutting line, a dashed sewing line, notches to line pieces up, and its name. Short sewing steps and your order number are printed along the bottom. Most outfits fit on a fat quarter (29 by 18 inches); bigger dolls or several garments print on one yard (56 by 36 inches). The designer picks the size and shows the price as you go.

Thread and closures (like hook-and-loop tape, elastic, or snaps for overalls) are not included. Any craft store has them.

How hard is it to sew?

The garments use straight seams and a few gentle curves, with the seam allowance (1/4" on an 18-inch doll, less on smaller dolls) already included on the panel. A sewing machine is quickest, and small doll garments can also be sewn by hand.

Because the pieces are printed, there is no tracing, pinning paper patterns or measuring.
