Doll size questions
What size is an American Girl doll?
American Girl dolls made since 2008 are 18 inches tall, measuring 11 ⅛″ at the chest, 10 ⅝″ at the waist and 12 ¼″ at the hips. That is our 18-inch size.
Do American Girl clothes fit Our Generation dolls?
Not exactly. On the measurement chart, an Our Generation doll is 1 ⅜″ bigger at the waist than American Girl, so clothes made for American Girl can be tight there. Enter your doll’s own measurements in the designer and the pattern is drafted to fit it.
Do all 18-inch dolls wear the same size clothes?
No. Of the 6 other 18-inch dolls in the chart, 4 measure more than ½″ off American Girl somewhere. Journey Girls is furthest off: 2 ⅛″ smaller at the hips. Measure your doll if the fit matters.
How to measure your doll
Measure the doll without clothes on, with a soft tape measure held snug but not tight.
- Chest: All the way around the fullest part, just under the arms.
- Waist: All the way around the narrowest part of the tummy.
- Hips: All the way around the widest part of the bottom.
- Shoulder to waist: From the top of the shoulder, next to the neck, straight down to the waist.
- Arm length: From the top of the shoulder down to the wrist, arm hanging straight.
- Waist to ankle: From the side of the waist straight down to the ankle.
The chart’s inseam (crotch to ankle) comes from the same measurement sheets. For your own doll we work it out from waist to ankle, so there is nothing more to measure.
For a tiny doll, wrap a thin strip of paper around it, mark where the paper meets, then lay the strip on a ruler.
